I posted a link to a construction photo of the main branch of the New York Public Library a few days ago. Here’s the cover of Scientific American, from an article describing the architecture and construction of the building, showing the relationship between the main reading room and the stacks below it [click to enlarge]:

Amazing work by Carrère and Hastings in the design and the stacks are, as has recently been pointed out, convenient to underground dwellers.
