The three parts of the recycling mantra – reduce, reuse, and recycle – do not get equal attention. A lot of our work is reuse, which in terms of ordinary recycling is often neglected. Buildings can be recycled – there’s a whole industry of selling building scrap – but reuse is the most environmentally-friendly option because it saves the energy and waste that would be required for demolition and new construction.

That’s a picture of the water-tank dunnage above the roof of an old factory. The water tank is long gone, no longer needed for the building’s current occupants, but the dunnage remains. A good place to put up cell-phone antennas, no?
