For The Weekend: Forts

by Don Friedman on November 13, 2016

A view of the Battery and Governor’s Island in the 1890s. Castle Clinton is out of frame off to the right, Castle Williams is on the right tip of the island, and Fort Jay is the vague mound in the middle of the island. Note the elevated train over Battery Place at the bottom center and the romanesque old South Ferry terminal building.

A nice touristy write-up of forts in New York: here.

We never set out to become experts in old forts, but an old structure is an old structure, and so we’ve worked on Castle Clinton, Castle Williams, Fort Jay, and Battery Weed (part of Fort Wadsworth). It greatly pleases me that none of these forts ever saw actual fighting.
