An Annotated List

by Don Friedman on April 4, 2017

This list of the oldest buildings in New York from Curbed is useful. Even if you know the city’s history, it can be hard to remember when various buildings were constructed.

A few comments…

Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Hendrick I. Lott House is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust. I was there with the HHT while asbestos was being removed; walking though an unairconditioned house in August while wearing a full-coverage Tyvec suit is a memorable and damp experience.

Old Stone House is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust. The adjacent park is where the Brooklyn Baseball Team played before they were known as the Dodgers.

John Bowne House is about four blocks from my elementary school. I visited there at least three times as a kid, maybe more. It’s now one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Friends Meeting House demonstrates, for me, the frailty of memory. I visited the house about twenty years ago to look at the roof. It’s near the Flushing YMCA, where I went a number of times as a child, and down the street from the (now defunct) RKO Keith’s Theater, where I went more than a number of times. I think I went in the Meeting House as a kid, but I’m not sure if I’ve conflated seeing it form the outside in the 70s with being inside in the 90s.

Queens County Farm Museum is a current favorite of my family. Get there early if you want to buy fresh produce.

Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House, as part of Richmond Town, is part of the Historic House Trust. The Curbed description mentions the Stillwell connection to Oude Dorp. “Oude Dorp” is Dutch for Old Village, and explain why Staten Island has a New Dorp.

Britton Cottage was a project for OSE. Richmond Town as a whole is part of the Historic House Trust.

Conference House is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Alice Austen House is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust and the site of an OSE repair project.

The Valantine Varian House is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Edgar Allan Poe Cottage is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Lorillard Snuff Mill is the site of a large project Marie worked on before she joined OSE.

Morris Jumel Mansion is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

St. Paul’s Chapel is the site of several projects for OSE, including investigation, repair, and modernization.

Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is one of the houses in the Historic House Trust.

Fraunces Tavern is literally across the street from our new office.
