Rust Strikes Again

SS Queen Mary leaving New York in the 1960s:

This story on the condition of the SS Queen Mary – docked in Long Beach, California, since the 1960s – is depressing. The short version: ocean-going ships are the size of buildings but are basically huge machines constructed of steel. They rust and the maintenance to preserve them must be never-ending and thorough.

The state of the SS United States – the fastest passenger liner ever built – is worse.

Without a use and without a lot of money, these fantastic artifacts will be gone forever. And if that happens, the world won’t end but it will be poorer for the losses.
