Newspaper Row, circa 1908. From the left, the World Building, the Tribune Building (as expanded) the New York Times Building, the American Tract Society (behind the Times), and the Potter Building.

The new exhibit at the Skyscraper Museum, opening today, is called “Ten and Taller.” It is based on some of my research into the origins and early years of skyscrapers, but while I was interested in the technological changes in construction between 1870 and 1900, Carol Willis and the museum staff have taken my data and gone in a different direction, emphasizing the development of the cityscape of New York as it was becoming what we see today.

Obviously I’m biased, but the exhibit was fascinating.
