Oops and Thanks

A friend, Jennifer Balson Alvarez, pointed out politely that I missed an obvious explanation for that hinged thing. It’s at the right elevation and the right location in plan to serve as a door-holder when used in combination with the U-bolt attached to the outside of the door (visible on the far right in the photo).

I still think that the thing was also a boot-scraper, as it is far too ornate and large to be merely a hook. But Jennifer is right: it was almost certainly a hook as one of its functions.

Just to repeat, I generally write these posts a week or two before they’re published. Today’s post was a special, to address an obvious mistake and a friendly correction.
